So I have been slowly but surely learning Português since I have got to Brazil. I know words like Oi, tudo bem (hello, how are you), obrigada (thank you), and de nada (your welcome). However, I have a lot more to learn. So I am of course really excited about starting my Português classes. I want to be able to communicate better with others instead of solely relying on my boyfriend to translate for me every time.
The other day, when I had my first Português lesson, I began learning the Português alphabet and conjugations. Fortunately for me, I remember some Spanish from high school, which really helps because the Português language is very similar to the Spanish language. Therefore, I was recognizing some words my teacher was writing down. It was funny though, because when I was pronouncing the words you could clearly say I was saying it the "American" way. Meaning, with no accent whatsoever and saying it how it looked.
The alphabet was a bit challenging for me. Marcos made a joke saying that his niece and nephew could teach me the alphabet, which we will be seeing them at the end of October. His niece is actually learning English now, she is 4 years old. So, she could teach me Português, while I could teach her English. It's kind of funny to think about a 4 year old teaching a 27 year old the alphabet (the Português alphabet anyways.)
I am not only excited to learn Português, but I am determined. I more than anything want to learn so that I can actually communicate with Marcos' parents. His dad knows some English, while his mother knows none. There is definitely a lot of gesturing going on when I talk to Marcos' mother, but either way we still enjoy each others company. Going forward, I will continue to improve my Português so that I can continue to communicate better with Marcos' parents and others around me.
This is my beautiful Português book I will be learning Português from. I will keep y'all updated as my Português improves. Stay tuned to the funny stories I will be telling you soon as I learn Português. | Marcos and I made this calendar. I wanted a huge calendar to write down mine and Marcos' important events. We both stay relatively busy, so I thought by using my agenda and a huge calendar like this one we could keep our schedules more organized, plus I would be learning Português at the same time. |
